Young go-getters will end recession, not government
Part 1 of 4.
By Katie Kieffer

Everyone wants to know, “Where is our economic growth going to come from?”
TIME Magazine reporter, Joshua Cooper Ramo, seems to think one innovative solution for the current U.S. monetary crisis would be to “reshape what it means to work in America.” In his Sept. 21, 2009 cover story for TIME called “Unemployment Nation,” Ramo describes his idea, which is really just another government stimulus program. D.C. & Vegas: Listen to young people, voting with pocketbooks.
by Katie Kieffer

Sheldon Adelson, Chair of the Las Vegas Sands Corp., is the perfect posterboy for Las Vegas’ financial meltdown. The 76-year-old who was third on Forbes’ list of the 400 Richest Americans in both 2007 and 2008 has lost $36.5 billion dollars (91.25% of his net worth) – more than anyone else in the world has lost during this recession. While most retailers across the country are changing their tune, listening to their customers and providing products and services at lower prices while marketing their value, Adelson is staying the course. Businessman with Alzheimer’s reveals dangers of public healthcare
A young person’s perspective on healthcare.
by Katie Kieffer

I’m a young woman in good health so, naturally, I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about death. My recent visit with my friend, Dick, who has Alzheimer’s, was eye-opening. I want to share my visit with you because it changed my whole perspective on the current healthcare debate.
When Dick was a young businessman, he worked hard running his own trucking and warehouse company. So, although he has a horrible illness now, he is able to spend his last days in his own home with his wife rather than in a sterile nursing home or hospital. Dick’s wife told me that she’s so glad he has a nice house and the ability to hire good live-in 24-hour help so that he can stay at home. She said, “If he didn’t have all this, he wouldn’t be happy.” Continue reading

Lake Superior’s solutions for the economic crisis.
by Katie Kieffer
Our mind comes up with creative solutions and connections when it has a chance to rest, studies show. Just like sleeping is part of a healthy day, vacations are part of a healthy life. The Scientific American’s article, “An Easy Way to Increase Creativity” reports how social psychologist, Lile Jia, and colleagues at the University of Indiana at Bloomington discovered that psychological distance from a problem – achieved in ways such as traveling – can increase creativity.

MNs trust business over government to grow economy, study reveals.
Part 2 of 2.
by Katie Kieffer

Introductory note: I recently attended a three-day “Civic College” course sponsored by the Minnesota Association of Realtors and the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. We received instruction from current and former elected officials, lobbyists, medial and PR professionals and campaign fundraising consultants. I gained valuable insight into life as a public servant, why business people should run for office, media relations and Minnesota’s voting demographics. I’ll share my top takeaways from Civic College in two parts. This is part two.
